AmeriCorps has a one-year placement for a Service Member in the Refugee Learning Center Education program of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas. This AmeriCorps Service Member will successfully promote and support the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas as guided by the Catholic Social Teachings.EEO

By accepting this Internship you will be required to become a member of the AmeriCorps VISTA Program; a stipend for this placement will be made by AmeriCorps and CCNEK.

Make a difference in your community, building skills and experience while serving as an AmeriCorps member.   By accepting this service position, you will be required to become a member of the AmeriCorps Program.   The AmeriCorps Program offers its Service Members a bi-weekly living allowance, individual health insurance, and student loan forbearance. After successfully completing the service term, members earn the Segal Education Award of five thousand eight hundred and fifteen dollars and members who are fifty-five and older also have the option to transfer the Award.   • Instruct literate and preliterate adult students utilizing selected ELL curriculum.
  • Assist in enrollment process for ELL program.
  • Teach cultural orientation classes on topics required for all new refugees by USCCB and ORR in the first ninety days of life in US using selected curriculum.
  • Provide individualized cultural orientation classes to students with transportation or childcare barriers.
  • Teach Job Readiness classes using selected curriculum.
  • Conduct program services in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with relevant faith based organizations, social service providers, and other community partners.
  • Complete all necessary documentation to ensure compliance with funding requirements and agency quality assurance standards.
  • Track student participation in Learning Center programs
  • Maintain detailed case notes of student's involved in programs 


Essential Functions:

  • Establish highly effective relationships with clients, community agencies, volunteers, and other staff members.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all clients.
  • Ensure accuracy and attention to detail in record keeping.
  • Communicate client progress with assigned Employment Specialist and Case worker.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing job duties, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to ten lbs. May need to lift or move heavier items based on resettlement needs of clients Will be expected to drive regularly to accomplish duties. 


  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field.
  • Familiarity with refugee populations.
  • Communicate effectively in both written and verbal form in English.
  • Have excellent presentation skills for large and small groups.
  • Utilize time management techniques to organize and prioritize work.
  • Work independently and meet timelines
  • Interpersonal skills to work cooperatively and effectively with refugees from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Must have good computer skills. Must be able to type and know how to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
