Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas is looking for New Roots for Refugees Summer Interns (unpaid) to successfully promote and support the purpose, vision and mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas as guided by the Catholic Social Teachings while providing education to the refugee farmers to develop small farming businesses by providing hands-on support and education in the field, at farmers' markets, and during English classes and skill-focused workshops. This intern will support New Roots for Refugees staff during the 2016 market season, spending at least half of their time providing direct market support to farmers. EEO


PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Provide transportation and support to farmers at markets – set up/ break down market stalls, demonstrate positive interaction with customers, help farmers count change and keep records, work on English skills, etc.
• Create promotional materials for individual farmers, CSA Friends, and the New Roots for Refugees program
• Monitor inventory of marketing supplies
• Prepare recipe cards for distribution at farmers' markets and maintain a constant supply
• Help New Roots staff clean and maintain vehicles during high usage times
• Attend weekly workshops if available (workshops take place on Thursdays 9am to 12pm)
• Other duties as assigned.


ESSENTIAL FUNTIONS:
• Utilize general office equipment such as phones, fax machines, copiers, e-mail, computer software including Microsoft office suite and all similar technology
• Maintain confidentiality of all clients
• Ensure accuracy and attention to detail in processing paperwork
• Work with clients in non-judgmental, accepting and supportive manner
• Become knowledgeable and adhere to the values of the Catholic Charities as it relates to the various programs; Hospice, EAC, Refugee and Adoption.
• Continue educating one's self as it relates to the various programs; EAC, Refugee, Adoption and Hospice.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
• Must be willing to live by the agency's Values, where we are called to show Love, Patience, Kindness, Faithfulness, Self- Control and Joy.
• Strong communication skills, including fluency in English
• Ability to stay flexible and calm when unexpected situations arise
• Must have a valid Missouri or Kansas Driver's License and reliable means of transportation for local travel; willingness to become DOT certified
• Schedule flexibility – be willing to work early mornings and/or weekends
• Physical Demands: Must be able to squat, get in and out of a truck bed, lift up to 50 lbs., set up 10' by 10' tents and 8' tables
Preferred:
• Experience working in environments that are multi-cultural and multi-lingual
• Experience with agriculture, gardening, or a related field


COMMITMENT:
• Minimum 20 hours/week (more if desired); mid-May through late September (flexible)
