Program Description:

This AmeriCorps member will be an integral team member in two different Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas' programs providing education for refugees and immigrants- Citizenship Education and Refugee School Impact.

 

The Citizenship Education Program offers three levels of civics and literacy classes, as well as interview preparation tutoring for refugees and immigrants in the Kansas City Area who are eligible to apply for the naturalization process. The center is located at CCNEK Central Office in Wyandotte County (Kansas City, KS). The purpose of the Citizenship Education Program is to enable refugees and immigrants to easily access civics and literacy instruction relevant to the naturalization process and citizenship interview test. The focus of this role will primarily be assisting the Citizenship Program Teachers & Manager with civics & literacy classes, including tutoring students and facilitating activities during classes, overseeing assessments and student record-keeping, supporting volunteer tutors, and providing general classroom and program support.

 

Refugee School Impact (RSI) is a continuously developing program that started in January 2017. The goal of the RSI program is orienting newly arrived refugee students and parents to the public school system, including facilitating orientations for refugee parents, identifying community resources and working with teachers and case managers to refer families to resources, and providing a summer school orientation program for refugee youth.

 

Both roles involve general support to staff members as well as working directly with refugees and immigrants.

Position Duties:

Citizenship Education Program

         Assist Citizenship Teachers with planning, preparing and facilitating daily classes, lesson activities, and field trips, including tutoring students during classes and substitute teaching when necessary

         Assist Citizenship Program staff with assessment proctoring, scoring, data entry, and data analysis (will receive training to administer and score standardized assessments)

         Develop and implement individualized tutoring and interview preparation plans for citizenship program students, train volunteers to lead interview preparation sessions, and coordinate volunteer and student schedules

         Monitor and record current and former students' USCIS interview and oath ceremony dates and outcomes

         Contribute to Citizenship Program volunteer training, record keeping, and support

         Provide general administrative assistance to Citizenship Program staff, including assisting with enrollment procedures, assessing and filing student work, and maintaining databases and other reporting documents for grant compliance

         Act as lead contact for library class expansion, including training and managing volunteers, creating and compiling resources and instructional materials and data collection. Some evenings and weekends possible.

Position Duties:

Refugee School Impact Program

         Facilitate orientations to the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools system for newly-arrived refugee parents and children, schedule interpreters and complete time sheets

         Partner with the local school district to ensure orientation information is relevant

         Assist team members in planning, coordinating, and facilitating a summer orientation program for refugee youth

         Research school-related issues and resources in refugee/Kansas City, Kansas communities and develop strategies to improve interactions between refugee families and the schools

Other Duties

         Teach financial literacy classes in compliance with AmeriCorps requirements

Qualifications:

         Fluency in English

         18 years old and older

         Experience working with diverse backgrounds and families experiencing poverty preferred

         Experience in education with diverse populations preferred

         Desire to work for the success of refugee parents and youth

         Patience and motivation to work with adult learners with limited English proficiency

         Demonstrate excellent organizational skills, ability to multitask and attention to detail

         Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and related programs

         Punctual and reliable

Commitment:

         Ability to commit to 1,700 hours over a one-year commitment (may include occasional evening and weekend hours)

         RIS Standard Onboarding Tasks

         Orientation to Citizenship Preparation Program & Refugee School Impact Program

         Training on CPP procedures, curriculum and strategies

         Training on naturalization process

         Assessment proctor training

         Follow-up trainings as required

Supervision Plan:

         Citizenship Program Manager to provide orientation training, assessment proctor training, curriculum training and volunteer hour collection. Shadowing of Citizenship Education Teachers will provide additional training.

         Meet bi-weekly with Citizenship Program Manager
